Finding A Literary Agent You Can Work With

by Carole Ashley

So you have finally finished writing the book for which you toiled so hard and just like your newborn, is very close to your heart? But, if you thought that writing the book was the hard part, think again. The hard stuff begins now, as you are trying to get your baby in printed form, so that others aside from you will have a chance to see it. A good literary agent can help sell your book. And hiring any agent is definitely not the way to go, as only a good agent can sell your book. There are many different literary agents out there, so you need to make sure the one you hire is the right one for your needs.

To start with, do a background search on the area of specialization of the book agents. This is very important, since some agents will only deal with children fiction, others with nonfiction, and yet some others only with poetry. When you find a list of agents that represents books like your own, you want to continue to skim the bunch by selecting only those that can protect your interest. This is difficult since finding agents who know their jobs is very difficult. And sometimes it might feel like a lost cause. You are likely to run into scammers that pass themselves as literary agents, but don't get discouraged. You are likely to run at least into a few of those, but they are fairly easy to recognize before you sign any kind of contract.

Traditionally, a good literary agent has learned his or her skills by working with other reputable and more experienced agents. That would have helped him learn the tricks of the trade by talking independently to the publishers as well as the authors. Once they are comfortable enough with their own individual skills, they move forward and start their own businesses. These agents toil hard and will be on your side without ever asking you for any monetary benefits. And, they will sometimes even help you edit your books free of charge.

If you have hired a scammer, you are probably going to receive a bill even before your book comes out in print. This is something that a genuine agent will not do. Once your book starts selling, he gets his money as a share of the amount you get from the proceeds. his can be a real-time filter of isolating a scammer from a genuine agent. Also, a scammer will make you get your revisions and editing done by a third party though it is supposed to be done by him for free. They are book agents after all and it is imperative that they should have editing skills.

In short, make sure you do extensive research on literary agents. You should feel comfortable with them right through. And if something doesn't strike you right, feel free to switch to a new one as soon as possible. And it is okay for you to switch more than once, since you must always feel comfortable with the people you are working with. Your agent can make or break your literary dreams.
