Enjoy Reading? How I Craft a Book Review

by Bernard O'Flynn

As an avid reader, opening a new book always causes my heart to lift. A journey awaits me between the covers of any book. Thus, receiving a new manuscript is always exciting - a new experience lies in wait for me.

This is how I typically go about book reviewing. I start with the outer appearances of the book. If the book review is for a book already published, I analyze the outside color to determine if it would catch my eye in a bookstore.

Then it is my favorite time in the book reviewing process. It is time to cuddle up in a chair, light a candle, and kick my feet up to read. I always do this with a notebook and pen on hand. Short books may be read in a single day, but longer ones may take me a couple days or longer.

In my notebook, I will make notes as I read. I will determine whether the content and title are in sync and whether the title is suitable to the intended audience. I will note the length of the book and whether that length is too short, too long, or just write. I will note if there is too much word padding. I will pinpoint the exact genre and question whether the text could hold up to other high quality books in that genre. I love connecting with characters, so will always note if they felt real or genuine to me and if they held my attention to the end. I try to find holes in the plot, just to make sure it is satisfying and well thought out.

If there are facts that I do not believe are accurate, I will make notes of that along with any grammatical errors or typos spotted. This is all followed up by some general impressions the book made on me and my personal responses to the book. I often include some critical comments, but it is done in a respectful manner with the intention of helping the author improve the book.

Before officially creating a book review from my notes, I spend some time sitting and thinking about the journey the book took me on.

Eventually, I will get on the computer and start typing out my book review with great thought to the details.

I may send the results to the author through email or may print out the book review and attach it to the manuscript or review copy to return through mail. I do this as soon after the book reviewing process as possible, so they do not have to wait.

The satisfaction of another journey with another new book is complete.
