Current Information Regarding Technical Writing Degrees

by Tom Addison

Many accredited universities and colleges offer Technical Writing degrees. Technical writing degree students are prepared to forge careers communicating about the sciences, medicine, technology, media and computers. Specialists in these areas and the general public will benefit from communications prepared by these professionals.

Until recently, these communications specialists prepared mainly manuals and other print materials. The past few years have produced many more job openings and work opportunities for graduates in this field. This type of degree is designated as a Bachelor of Science as opposed to a Bachelor of Arts.

They are often referred to as scientific writers as they learn how to communicate, develop, organize and manage scientific and technological information systems. Some become website designers and developers after graduation. Many write for the public and for specialists, designing and organizing user manuals and guides for computers, cell-phones and other sophisticated pieces of equipment.

If a student specializes in medical technology communications, they will be able to produce medical equipment reference manuals used by healthcare workers and medical personnel. Others will produce patient-care pamphlets and brochures. Many will migrate to the pharmaceutical side of documentation producing research and product literature.

Work-study programs help a student optimize their knowledge and skill-development prior to graduation. This will ensure that more students are seen as "job-ready" by employers. Some students may focus on a particular field while others may choose to explore many different areas to increase their opportunities for work in a variety of areas.

Working in the various fields, while studying, provides another opportunity for young minds. Students could potentially solve existing technological problems while learning how to best describe the function of products or processes as they currently exist. New innovations, programs, designs and strategies have resulted from these exercises.

Students will be well-advised to study related subjects in addition to the required courses such a organizational behaviour and design, psychology and business courses. This will be advantageous for students working toward either a diploma or a BS.

Students entering work-study programs provide themselves with opportunities to enhance their portfolio before job-hunting. A technical writing degree provides students with the opportunity to exercise and demonstrate the ability to interpret and communicate scientific and technological knowledge.
